Against Odds, Council Rock North Wrestler Brings Silver Medal Home from Fargo National Tournament
Council Rock North wrestler Xavier Diaz beat the odds and won an unexpected silver medal at the Fargo National Tournament in July, writes Drew Markol for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Recent graduate Diaz was undersized during his high school years, barely weighing 100 pounds during senior season. But he did not let that deter him, and managed to get to 107 pounds and achieve 15-0 in early February.
However, he was knocked out of the lineup in wrestle-offs after two players dropped to that weight. Diaz tried to get a spot at 114, just missing out.
“But after he lost, he went right back to practice and kept working,” said Council Rock North head coach Mike Diglia.
Dias set a new goal for himself by entering the nation’s toughest age-group freestyle tournament in Fargo.
“I’d been out to Fargo two other times, but I didn’t place,” said Diaz. “My goal this time was to go there and bring home a medal.”
He achieved both. Wrestling at 100 pounds and seeded seventh, he did the unexpected by making it to the finals and bringing home the silver.
