Bucks County–Based Nonprofit Acquires Last Community Health Systems Hospitals in Pennsylvania
Bucks County-based nonprofit WoodBridge Healthcare Inc., led by healthcare veteran Joshua Nemzoff, has agreed to purchase the last three Pennsylvania hospitals from Community Health Systems Inc., writes Harold Brubaker for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The $120 million deal encompasses Wilkes-Barre General Hospital and two Scranton facilities: Regional Hospital of Scranton and Moses Taylor Hospital. The transaction, pending regulatory approval, is expected to close by the end of the year.
WoodBridge Healthcare, newly established and helmed by Nemzoff, represents a significant shift from his previous for-profit endeavors. “….we don’t need to make more money; so I think we’re just doing the right thing,” Nemzoff said.
Tennesse-based Community Health Systems once held 19 hospitals in Pennsylvania at its peak in 2016.
The company has been steadily divesting, including a 2017 sale of five Philadelphia-area hospitals to Tower Health for $423 million.
Many of the hospitals sold by CHS have since closed, such as Brandywine and Jennersville Hospitals in Chester County.
After the sale of the three northeastern Pennsylvania hospitals, CHS will operate 68 hospitals across 14 states.
WoodBridge plans to recognize existing union contracts with SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses & Allied Professionals.
