Upper Makefield Township Seeks to Preserve Historic Washington Crossing Bridge
Upper Makefield Township is taking action to protect the historic Washington Crossing Toll-Supported Bridge from potential replacement, writes Tom Sofield for Newtown PA Now.
Concerns have risen over the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission’s plans to rehabilitate or reconstruct the 119-year-old bridge.
In response, the township supervisors have enlisted historical expert Jeffrey Marshall, former head of the Heritage Conservancy, to pursue historic district designation for the Taylorsville section.
Marshall is researching whether the area around the bridge meets the standards of the National Register of Historic Places.
Known for its narrowness, the bridge’s 15-foot-wide roadway and 7.5-foot lanes have led to operational challenges and minor accidents. The bridge’s slim design is unique among the commission’s 18 vehicle spans.
