While Philadelphia Region Lost Population in Last Three Years, Montgomery County Recorded Uptick
While the eight-county Philadelphia region saw its population shrink by 0.2 percent between 2020 and 2023, Montgomery County recorded an uptick over the same period, write Oona Goodin-Smith and John Duchneskie for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Montgomery County’s population increased from 856,541 to 868,742 from April 1, 2020, to July 1, 2023. That represents a change of 1.4 percent or 12,201 new residents.
The highest number of new residents in the entire eight-county area was recorded in Upper Merion Township, which added over 2,000 people.
Most towns on the Main Line continued to increase in population. According to planning experts, one of the main reasons that influenced the population changes in the affluent enclave was the development of new multifamily housing – with Montgomery County experiencing some of the highest levels of development in the region over the last several years.
Greg Diebold, a DVRPC planning data analyst, pointed to the 132-acre mixed-use Village at Valley Forge in King of Prussia as one of the population catalysts with thousands of new multifamily units and over a million square feet in commercial and retail space being added.
