New Trees Transform Buckingham Township Wetlands in Student-Driven Effort

A partnership between local schools and Bucks Beautiful has brought new life to a once-neglected wetlands area in Buckingham Township.

A partnership between local schools and Bucks Beautiful has brought new life to a once neglected wetlands area in Buckingham Township, writes Jeff Werner for the Patch.

Seventh graders from Holicong Middle School’s PEN Program and volunteers from Central Bucks East High School Key Club spearheaded the initiative, which culminated in a major planting event.

Holicong students raised $255 for the project, while Bucks Beautiful matched the funds and organized the purchase and installation of native plants.

Buckingham Township’s Environmental Advisory Committee co-chair Jim Walter and Bucks Beautiful’s community engagement manager Jennifer Finelli, both Master Gardeners, chose native species like summersweet shrubs, swamp milkweed, Sweetbay magnolia, and a Redbud tree. The township contributed additional plants and compost.

Master Watershed Stewards and Key Club members planted the new greenery, working tirelessly to transform the space.

Bucks Beautiful, a community grant provider since 1991, continues to support public garden and tree plantings.
