The Bucks County Playhouse wrapped up the world premiere this Sunday of the musical “Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” celebrating the life of the vaudeville icon Sophie Tucker, writes Alicia Vitarelli for 6 ABC Philadelphia.

Ryann Redmond starred as Sophie Tucker, a pioneering performer known for her larger-than-life personality.

“It’s so wonderful to get to portray her in 2024 and bring her story to life,” Redmond says. “She has so much verve and she’s so powerful and wonderful.”

The musical, co-written by Harrison David Rivers along with Susan and Lloyd Ecker, explores Tucker’s early years, from her discovery in her family’s Hartford restaurant to her rise in New York City.

“Last of the Red Hot Mamas” promises a Broadway-worthy experience with its fast pace, humor, and spectacular tap dancing.

The production’s journey to the stage has been notably swift. “Musicals take a long time to get on stage,” Rivers notes. “I feel like the Bucks County Playhouse has given us a great gift to see the show sooner than most.”
