Theater fans who know the Cyndi Lauper score of Kinky Boots well will be surprised by an addition to the musical, now running at the Bucks County Playhouse. A song she wrote for the Broadway version — and trimmed before opening night — has been restored for the local version.
The show, based on a British film of the same name, is about a struggling shoe factory owner who finds a market for his company’s footwear in drag-show performers.
The Broadway production won six 2013 Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
“As a producer in New York, I was fortunate to work on the show from its inception. We are very excited to bring a new take on the show to Playhouse audiences,” says Producing Director Alexander Fraser.
The restoration of “So Long, Charlie,” the dropped Lauper song, came with permission from the singer-songwriter herself. The Playhouse staff was “thrilled” at the go-ahead, as the reinsertion “gave our audiences a chance to hear something new” while fleshing out a character.
Kinky Boots also marks the post-pandemic return of the Playhouse’s storied Apprentice Program, which gave stars like Grace Kelly an early start.
