Kirkland Farm Plays a Role in Pennsylvania’s Farmland Preservation Efforts

Robin A. Staff’s historic Kirkland Farm, a 120-acre horse farm in Springfield Township, is a playing a role in Pennsylvania’s latest farmland preservation initiative. 

The Shapiro Administration announced today that the state will purchase development rights for 2,629 acres across 28 farms in 19 counties, safeguarding them from future residential or commercial development.  

This conservation effort, approved by the State Agricultural Land Preservation Board, represents a $9.8 million investment aimed at supporting Pennsylvania farmers and their communities. 

“Pennsylvania’s location — near ports, interstates, railways, and 40 percent of the U.S. population — makes our state a great place to do business,” ” said Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding.” 

Pennsylvania leads the nation in preserved farmland. Since the Farmland Preservation Program began in 1988, the state has protected 6,392 farms and 639,254 acres across 58 counties, investing over $1.7 billion. 

In Bucks County alone, the investment totaled $1,212,200. By partnering with county and local governments, the state ensures that farms like Kirkland remain productive and contribute to food security.
