Antoinette Ellis, the North Philadelphia high school senior who was named a Gates Scholar, has selected the University of Michigan as her next stop this fall, writes Chanel Hill for The Philadelphia Tribune.
She plans to study nursing.
“When you go on to the University of Michigan’s page, one of the things that they stressed were creative leaders in nursing and global health,” said Ellis.
Ellis applied to 20 different schools, and made her decision based on their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) passing rate and campus activities.
Beyond those factors, her interest in Michigan was due to the college’s investment in her. The university asked her while she was participating in the nonprofit, Heights Philadelphia.
They even flew her and her family out to Ann Arbor for a campus day.
Ellis immediately felt a sense of community at the college when she visited in February.
“It felt very genuine. … You could just see the passion in their eyes about their school,” she said.
Currently a senior at Parkway Center City Middle College, Ellis will graduate at the top of her class with a 4.39 GPA and receive her high school diploma on June 12.
She already received her associate degree in liberal arts from Community College of Philadelphia on May 4.
