Madeline Bell became the first woman to hold the position of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia chief executive nearly a decade ago, and the hospital has been thriving under her leadership since, writes Michael Bradley for the Main Line Today.

Her one regret is that she did not sell herself harder prior to getting the position. She was serving as CHOP’s chief operating officer when she started getting offers from other hospitals for the role of CEO.

“I had people reach out from other hospitals to interview me for the CEO role,” she said. “But I didn’t see myself in the CEO role until other people did.”

During her nine years as the CEO, CHOP has continued to grow and expand outside its University City base. The hospital now has several satellite locations, including in New Brunswick and Cape May, New Jersey. The crowning jewel of its expansions is the CHOP Specialty Care Center in King of Prussia, with its myriad of specialty services.

In addition to working long hours at CHOP, Bell serves on many boards, including the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia and the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and also hosts the weekly podcast, Breaking Through With Madeline Bell.
