Drexel Hill Gymnast Part of Cirque Du Soleil’s ‘Corteo’

For Cirque du Soleil performer Jonathan Buese, an upcoming performance of “Corteo” at Temple University’s Liacouras Center will be a homecoming, writes Sabrina Boyd-Surka for KYW Newsradio.

It should be familiar turf to aerialist Buese who was born in Drexel Hill and started gymnastics as a kid.

“My dad used to work at Temple,” Buese said, “and that’s actually the arena where we’re going to be playing, which is pretty neat.”

He and his family later moved to Florida. Buese competed in the NCAA gymnastics championships for the University of Iowa.

He was picked by Cirque du Soleil during a competition. He joined their Las Vegas show and did a tour in Europe.

“I never traveled so much before I started touring,” he said. “I still hadn’t really left the U.S. besides going to Canada … and so just jumping around in all these different cities and countries in Europe was amazing … and I’ve been touring ever since.”

Cirque du Soleil, a Canadian company, offers a variety of shows, both tours and residencies. Its calling card features dazzling acrobatics along fantastical story themes.

Buese is performing in “Corteo” and also performs in “Tournik.”
