How High Schoolers in Pennridge School District Are Teaching Younger Students to Combat Bullying
High school students in Bucks County are stepping up as role models through the Pennridge School District’s anti-bullying program, which empowers them to teach younger students about being upstanders, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6 ABC Philadelphia.
The initiative, run by NOVA, a crime victim support agency, involves high school students facilitating the “ENCOURAGE Upstanders” program for first, third, fifth, and seventh graders.
Katie Sanford, NOVA’s Prevention Coordinator, highlights that this peer education strategy allows students to have a significant influence on younger peers, fostering a culture of support and intervention against bullying.
Among the participants is senior Michael Muiruri, who moved to the U.S. from Kenya at age six. He appreciates the opportunity to serve as a role model, recognizing the unique impact that peer-led initiatives can have.”
Being able to be part of one is awesome, because I know the kids definitely look up to us in many different ways that we don’t even realize,” Muiruri reflects.
This program not only combats bullying but also builds a supportive community where students learn the importance of standing up for others.
