Virtual reality technology helped 94-year-old Mary Rogers fulfill her lifelong dream to visit Antarctica, writes Tamala Edwards for 6 ABC.

Rogers, who is an avid traveler and had previously visited all continents but the southernmost one, managed to finally visit the snowy region without having to leave her Langhorne residence.

“I am so overwhelmed by it,” she said. “Is this really happening? Am I really seeing Antarctica?”

Jennifer McLaughlin, Life Enrichment Director at Oxford Crossings in Langhorne, helped guide the virtual traveler through her experience. Rogers was able to see ten different Antarctica regions, including Deception Island.

“It’s amazing,” she said.

Rendever is a virtual reality platform that can transport users to the destination of their choosing after they put on the provided goggles. McLaughlin called it “inspiring” for residents as it allows them to travel from their homes.

“It makes you feel as if you’re there – in an immersive environment,” said McLaughlin.

Rogers said she started traveling after all four of her children were in college.

“And then my two sisters and I all had the travel bug,” she said. “And then we three sisters took off for England.”

Over the years, she has visited 65 countries.
