Newtown Township will soon be installing LED fixtures in its streetlights, which officials say will save the township money in the long term, writes Greg Vellner for The Reporter.

The $720,000 project involves converting 190 streetlights. 4,000k LEDs will be installed in areas with heavier traffic, and a 3,000k LED in residential areas.

The project will allow the township to save $43,679 in maintenance costs so that 20 years down the road, it will yield a net of $153,210 each year.

About 70 municipalities in the region have switched to LED, including Newtown Borough, Langhorne Manor, New Hope, Penndel, and Middletown Township.
