One Chester County restaurant found its place among the unsung heroes in the Philadelphia region who consistently deliver high-quality food, writes Michael Klein for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

La Peña Mexicana in Kennett Square is set in a shed that looks like an old gas station. The structure is painted in yellow and brown vertical stripes and has red, white, and green that represent the Mexican flag framing the roof line.

The eatery was originally Julian Peña’s homey taqueria, which followed the chef’s brief stint with a food truck – which ended up crashing. Peña, who hails from Iguala in Guerrero, close to a hamlet called Filadelfia on Mexico’s southwest coast, soon after broadened his menu to include seafood.

Among the highlights is the highly spicy deviled shrimp which is swimming in red chipotle sauce and is served with rice and beans.

La Peña Mexicana offers large portions, especially if you order one of their platters. You can enjoy your meal at the restaurant while watching some Mexican TV or if you prefer to eat at home you can also order takeout.
