Jamison Elementary School fifth graders gave a lot of love to The Bridges senior-living community in Warwick for Valentine’s Day, writes Nick Iadonisi for 6 ABC.

Teacher Jared Hottenstein brings his students and seniors together to teach them lessons of compassion.

He says that The Bridges being right next to the school gave his class the perfect opportunity to take kids on a quick field trip.

But the pandemic put these heartwarming visits on pause. “We were not allowed to see the residents at all,” said Hottenstein.

But that did not stop students from giving back. The class resorted to creative measures, such as chalk art or interacting with the residents through windows.

Now that visits are back-in-person, students gave their senior friends cards for Valentine’s Day.

Fifth-grade teacher Jennifer Fahy emphasized the importance of bonding the students with the residents.

“It’s unbelievable. There are a lot of residents here who don’t have family members and we have a lot of students that don’t have grandparents. The relationship that they’re building is something that can’t be replaced,” she said.
