Several Kintnersville neighbors are attempting to halt the planned expansion of the nearby youth camp run by Haycock Camping Ministries, writes Zoë Read for the WHYY.

The tax-exempt nonprofit offers day and overnight youth programs and activities, including kayaking and riflery.

Residents considered Haycock a friendly neighbor for years, but recently they say they’ve expressed disdain over loud gunshots coming from the camp’s ranges.

Now that Haycock wants to expand both its buildings and sewage treatment facilities, as well as adding athletic fields, a basketball court, a gymnasium, and a new shooting range, some residents have concerns.

This includes increased traffic and noise, as well as the way such development could impact the environment, as the site is home to woodlands and wetlands.

“The current proposal is going to result in way too many people, way too much water usage, too much sewage, too much noise,” said Quentin Brown, who has lived near the camp for over two decades.

Neighbors have so far collected more than 140 signatures on the petition and are splitting the cost of an attorney to try and block the development.
