Prima Theatre’s “Off the Yellow Brick Road” Brings a Modern Twist to Dorothy’s Tale
Lancaster’s Prima Theatre is unveiling its latest production, “Off the Yellow Brick Road.” The show is a world premiere, offering a fresh take on the classic tale of Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz” by placing it in the context of today’s digital age. The brainchild of Mitch Nugent, Prima’s Founder, and Executive Artistic Producer, this innovative production promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience.
A Fresh Perspective on a Timeless Story
The character of Dorothy always yearned for a life beyond her own. This resonated with Nugent as he thought about the digital-dominated world his children were growing up in.
This contemporary adaptation of Dorothy’s journey moves away from traditional storytelling, using pop songs to progress the narrative, with lyrics that help remind us that our best journey, as Nugent put it, might just be “a bit off the beaten path.”
An Immersive Theatrical Experience
The production process presented both creative challenges and opportunities. Nugent and his team, which included a California-based set designer, converted the theater into an immersive environment. The room feels like a cyclone, with rings overhead and circular patterns on the floor, capable of transforming into various locations,” Nugent described. The casting process, especially finding the right Dorothy, took over a year, culminating in the selection of Jarynn Whitney, a rising star known for her role in the Broadway musical “Six.”
Prima Theatre: A Cultural Gem
Prima Theatre offers a unique cultural experience. It boasts free parking, comfortable and wide seating, and an in-the-round stage, combining the Brooklyn vibe with Lancaster’s well-known tranquility. “If you’re looking for an unexpected experience that’ll disrupt the norm, Prima’s your place” Nugent added.

This production is more than a musical or a concert; it’s a reflection on our modern era, inviting audiences to consider a vibrant life might just be “a bit ‘off’ the yellow brick road.” It’s a must-see for all ages, promising an unforgettable journey through song, dance, and immersive storytelling.
