The 2024 Lotus Eletre R, the high-performance variant of Lotus’s all-electric SUV, offers perfect blend of formidable horsepower and ultramodern technology while also rivaling Tesla’s efficiency and sophistication, writes Dan Neil for The Wall Street Journal.

The vehicle, which is assembled in Wuhan, China, is the first all-electric Lotus of the company’s post-petroleum era.

After taking a controlling interest in the 75-year-old manufacturing concern in 2017, Chinese conglomerate Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has spent over $2 billion to turn it into a luxury electric hothouse now known as Lotus Technology.

The investment saved the company, based in Hethel, England.

Its latest vehicle has 450 hp and can go from 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds. In the WLTP cycle, the car is rated at 373 miles of range. Its 800V system makes it possible to recharge up to 350 kW. This nets up to 80 percent of capacity in 20 minutes, which equals 74 miles of range in five minutes.

The size of the Lotus Eletre R is significantly larger than the usual small, low, and lightweight Lotus cars that people are used to. Instead, this new model is big, tall, and thick. It boasts a dual-motor all-wheel drive and four-corner air suspension, as well as a large battery stored underneath.

Due to its 48V electrical architecture, the vehicle is able to support various power-hungry systems, such as active and adaptive suspension damping and anti-roll control and active and dynamic rear-wheel steering.

The Eletre also features advanced driver-assist system sensors, all of which are future-proofed for Level 4 autonomous operation once it is approved by the regulators.

The car is equipped with the new Lotus Hyper OS running the gaming industry’s Unreal Engine graphics software for amazing results.
