Perkasie Girl With Rare Disease Celebrates First Christmas on Life-Changing Medication
A young Perkasie girl with a rare disease is getting life-changing medication for Christmas this year, reports Stephanie Stahl for CBS News Philadelphia.
Seven-year-old Emma Watson has a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome that leads to developmental delays. For the first six years of her life, Emma was non-verbal. She had her first seizure at four months old.
“We had no idea what had happened to her,” says her mother, Nicole Watson. “It was the scariest moment in my life.”
The seizures continued with no diagnosis. Fortunately, after switching doctors, Emma’s family was able to figure out what was wrong through genetic testing. However, treatment usually changes every year. Now Emma is on medication that’s reduced the seizures.
This will be her first Christmas on this medication that has enhanced her quality of life. Christmas will mark a new beginning for Emma and her family.
“This year, she’s so excited,” said Nicole.
