George School’s football program is reaching the end zone, as the Newtown private Quaker school decided to discontinue the team, writes Tom Moore for the Bucks County Courier Times.

The news was confirmed in a letter sent out by the head of school Sam House and director of athletics Kurt Ruch. Numbers and lack of experience have been notable challenges for the team throughout the season.

The Cougars recently went 0-7 in the 100th season of the program and were outscored by Caravel Academy. The letter also cited safety concerns and the proper allocation of resources as causes of disbanding the team.

“Building a consistently competitive football team that meets our criteria for health and safety requires an allocation of resources that disrupts the equitable distribution of resources across all our programs — from arts to athletics and, above all, academics. … George School remains committed to athletics.”

The school’s administration considered dropping the program a year ago but opted for an 11-on-11 campaign.
