When Anthony “Dappa” Samuels resigned from his accounting job in 2017, it coincided with a new career endeavor, writes Abigail Adams for People.

A rapper and musician, leaving his former job set the table for him to become the co-founder of Young With Options Academic Center, a daycare center with facilities in West Philadelphia and Northeast Philadelphia that serves low-income families.

Being a rapper and entrepreneur allows Samuels to help his community in more ways than one.

“I love being able to be there and be hands-on. I take a lot of pride in that, and it actually helps me with music and in life,” said Samuels.

He, and assistant director Dinnelle Jordan, fancy YWO as more than just a daycare. Together, they help organize classes geared toward allowing young people to flex their creativity through activities such as poetry, music, and acting.

Having grown up in the Strawberry Mansion section of North Philadelphia, Samuels is aware of the environment many of the children are from and strives to set a good example for them.

His goals are to grow as a musician and open more daycares in the future.

“It’s all about me making a difference,” said Samuels.
