Upon receiving a job offer, you’re in a pivotal position. The company’s investment in the interview process indicates their commitment to you, making this the optimal time to negotiate your salary, writes Robin Madell for U.S. News & World Report.

Yet, many candidates, perhaps due to apprehension, bypass this step, accepting the initial offer. This can be a misstep, as employers often anticipate negotiation and might propose a lower starting figure, expecting an upward negotiation.

To effectively navigate this, arm yourself with knowledge. Research the average salaries for your role in your area, providing a benchmark and data to support your negotiation.

Your unique skills and experiences can justify a salary above the average. When considering a figure, have a realistic range that aligns with industry norms and your qualifications. Practicing your pitch ensures confidence during the discussion.

It’s also strategic to let the employer broach the salary topic, ensuring you don’t appear too eager or lock into a premature figure.

While your base salary is vital, the entire compensation package, including benefits and bonuses, should be part of the conversation. When suggesting a salary, aim a bit higher, allowing room for negotiation.

If the initial offer is below industry standards, express your enthusiasm for the role, then present your case, emphasizing your unique value. Even if budget constraints are cited, reiterate your worth and seek reconsideration.

Salary negotiation is both an art and a skill. With preparation and understanding of your value, you can secure a salary that mirrors your worth.
