Job security in the age of AI hinges on adaptability and skill enhancement writes Dr. John Mitchell for Forbes.

The World Economic Forum’s 2020 report indicates that by 2025, AI will displace 85 million jobs but spawn 97 million new ones across 26 countries, signaling that flexibility and upskilling are paramount.

Upskilling: The Modern Mandate

Upskilling involves refining current abilities or learning new ones to stay competitive. Organizations and employees are adopting this strategy to address evolving job requirements.

This can be as basic as enhancing typing skills or as advanced as enrolling in coding seminars or digital courses. While foundational competencies remain vital, job security is bolstered by flexibility and acquiring diverse credentials.

Diversification: The Road to Career Versatility

Career flexibility is rooted in skill diversification. For example, evolving from an electrical engineer to roles in business, nonprofits, and education provides a wide-ranging skill set.

However, finding replacements for such multi-faceted roles is a tall order. A candidate proficient in software, hardware, business, and project management becomes a prized asset.

Flexibility: The Bedrock of Job Security

There’s a prevailing notion that deep specialization is the sole path. While depth is valuable, the employee of the future is malleable.

With AI’s rise, continuous learning is paramount. Employers should foster growth opportunities, and employees must be perpetual students.

In today’s fluid job market, the ability to adapt is crucial. Individuals must be prepared to evolve, aiming always to be irreplaceable. The employment landscape is ever-changing.
