The $1 million dollar donation will allow CHOP to expand its Food Pharmacy Program in Norristown.

Food insecurity is a major issue in Montgomery County and lack of nutritious foods can severely hurt your health.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Food Pharmacy Program tries to combat the effects of food security by offering healthy foods and better health outcomes to families struggling financially, writes Emily Crowe for Progressive Grocer.

And now with a $1 million dollar donation from The Giant Company, the program will be able to reach more people in need. The money will allow the program to expand to the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Primary Care Center in Norristown.

Families will be able to order food online and have it delivered to their door and in the fall there will also be a small in-person pantry open at the Norristown center.

“The Giant Co. first became involved with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Food Pharmacy Program in 2018 because the need was clear, and we knew we could help,” said Joanna Crishock, VP of marketing and commercial planning for the company.

“Increasing access to healthy foods and promoting nutrition is a priority of ours every day, both in and outside our stores, as is reducing food insecurity.”

The Giant Company has been supporting the CHOP program since the beginning. Its initial donation established Food Pharmacy as part of the Healthy Weight Program and since then the company has continued to provide additional funding to help expand the program.
