A project to redesign State Route 29 to reestablish the Delaware River waterfront in Trenton, just outside of Bucks County, took a step forward last week, writes P. Kenneth Burns for the WHYY.

According to Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora, the project was awarded a $1.016 million grant from the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission to consider potential redesign concepts for the portion of the route from Landing Street near the Trenton Thunder Ballpark to the north of Calhoun Street.

“[This] planning grant will enable us to redesign the highway … that goes along our waterfront to essentially bow it out so that we can recapture more waterfront,” said Gusciora. “That will be an economic viability for the city.”

The area where the state highway was constructed was previously known as Stacy Park. It was a waterfront signature defined by open spaces, landscaped features, and promenades. A large portion of the park was purchased by the state in the 1950s to build a highway.

The project, which is being managed by Mercer County, is currently seeking bids for an engineer to come up with a new concept.
