Norristown-based Superior Play Systems is meeting the fast-growing demand for backyard pickleball courts with a recently developed PickleGrip surface, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Superior Play Systems became an authorized dealer for flooring products by SnapSports a few years ago. The company’s tiles are used to make courts where people can enjoy a game of basketball, tennis, volleyball, inline hockey, and now pickleball.

“We do a lot of basketball courts, but pickleball has become a big part of the business,” said Tom McAndrews, of Superior Play Systems. “The reason pickleball has become big for us is because nobody can find court time. People come to us and say they want a pickleball court in their backyard.”

The price tag for a backyard pickleball court is around $40,000 if installed correctly with a sub-base made of concrete beneath the playing surface.

The newly developed PickleGrip tiles feel much better than the previously added tennis court tiles.

“For maintenance on the PickleGrip surface all you need is a leaf blower,” said McAndrews. “The tiles are perforated so courts dry faster.”
