Half a century after playing his final NBA game, Overbrook High School alumnus Wilt Chamberlain is still one of the best and most accomplished players, writes Erin Clark for the Report Door.

His career — which came to an end on May 10, 1973 — encompassed:

• 14 seasons
• Four MVP awards
• Two championships
• 13 All-Star appearances

Throughout his years with the NBA, he scored 31,419 points and nabbed 23,924 rebounds. He also set countless records throughout 1,205 regular-season and playoff games.

“When Wilt retired, he owned over 100 records in the NBA,” said Sonny Hill, a childhood friend of Chamberlain who has been a broadcaster with Sports Radio WIP 94.1 in Philadelphia for 36 years.

Chamberlain did not, however, completely walk away from basketball.

He coached the San Diego Conquistadors for one season — after he was told he could not play for them due to a contract issue with the Lakers. Then he joined the Bucketeers, an exhibition team created by Harlem Globetrotter Meadowlark Lemon.

“I think what happened was, in his mind, that was something that was much more relaxing and something he enjoyed,” said Hill.

Chamberlain passed in 1999 at age 63.
