The acclaimed coach helped local coaches find inspiration many years ago.

A coach from a well-known university once shared his game-winning wisdom with a group of young athletes from Bucks County. Staff writers for the Tiger Blog wrote about the coach and his local connection.

Lacrosse coaching legend Bill Tierney, who is retiring after an amazing coaching career, once shared advice and offered words of wisdom to a group of youth coaches in Bucks County. Tierney served as the head coach at Princeton University from 1988 until 2009, when he took over the University of Denver men’s lacrosse program.

Most lacrosse players consider him the greatest coach of all time with good reason. Before he took over, Princeton had never been to the NCAA tournament before. By year five, he won it all. Meanwhile, Denver had two NCAA tournament appearances and no wins when he took the reins. In 2015, he won the championship.

In 2009, he visited Buck County to speak with a group of young coaches. His message of the day was that if they only walk away from a youth game satisfied if they won, they were doing it wrong.

He also said that if they were willing to “kick ’em in the butt,” they also have to turn around and embrace them.
