The trail will see further updates after receiving a large amount of funds.

A Bucks County trail recently received a large amount of funds through major grants, allowing further updates to the popular outdoor spot.

The construction of Newtown Rail Trail received $2.5 million in federal and state grants, which will help fund the second phase of the project as it extends into Northampton Township.

The receipt of a $1.5 million grant from the state Department of Transportation and a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development was approved by the Bucks County Commissioners during their Jan. 4 public meeting.

“Our trail system is one of the true gems of Bucks County, and we’re excited to see it expand and improve,” said Commissioner Chair Bob Harvie. “We are thankful for our partners in the state and federal governments for their continued support of these projects that are enjoyed by so many of this county’s visitors and residents.”

This extension will add approximately one and a half miles to the existing path. It will link Tamanend Park in Upper Southampton Township with the Churchville Nature Center.

The project will be in the design and engineering phase throughout 2023, with construction slated to start the following year and then continue for around 18 months to two years.
