Halloween Themed? New Pa. Driver’s Licenses to Start Releasing; Changes Include a Ghost Portrait

By

Newly designed driver’s licenses with enhanced security features will soon be available to drivers in Pa., according to a staff report from 6abc.

The licenses and identification cards are part of PennDOT’s ongoing security improvements.

The Summerdale Driver License Center in Enola, Cumberland County, will first start issuing new licenses this week. By mid-November, all driver and photo centers statewide will transition to the new format.

According to PennDOT, the new version of the ID will be phased in over the next four-year renewal cycle to replace existing ones. During the transition period, both new and current cards will be in circulation.

“The update is an important component of PennDOT’s ongoing work to enhance and protect the integrity of the driver’s license and identification card issuance process,” said PennDOT Secretary Yassmin Gramian.

The new license has slight design differences from the current one. These includes rearranged driver information and the ghost portrait now being in a circle.

New security features on the redesigned cards include:

  • Guilloche Security Design, which embeds customized security patterns
  • Optically Variable Ghost Portrait and Variable Data with UV, imagery that changes (or disappears completely) when viewed from different angles
  • Dynamic Look Through Element, a gold-metallic tint

The new design and security features will be used both by standard and REAL ID-compliant products.
