Brandywine Valley SPCA in West Chester is the first in the region to step up and help some of the thousands of beagles that were rescued from an Envigo breeding and research facility in Central Virginia earlier this month, writes John McDevitt for KYW Newsradio.

The Humane Society of the United States is currently securing accommodations for 4,000 beagles with help from its partners from across the country.

The Brandywine Valley SPCA will take in 20 dogs in the hopes of finding them their forever homes. The pooches are expected to arrive at the West Chester pet rescue in mid-August.

“We are going to take those beagles in, assess them for both medical [issues] and for socialization, make sure they get everything they need, and then they are going up for adoption across our campuses to find families,” said BVSPCA Chief Marketing Officer Linda Torelli.

“They have been in that mass breeding facility and slated for animal testing, so they have no idea what it’s going to be like to have the love of a family,” added Torelli. “We can’t wait to give them that.”
