Horse Rescued in Phila. Recovers in Quakertown. Is His Situation Still Dire? Caregivers Say, ‘Nay’

By

An abandoned horse wandering the 4000 block of North Darien Street in Phila.’s Hunting Park section is no longer orphaned. Alicia Vitarelli rounded up the details for 6abc.

On May 29, the stray caught the attention of residents who then reported him to authorities. Absent a name, the animal care experts who got him off the streets named him Darien, taken from the thoroughfare from which he was rescued.

The horse’s backstory is unclear; however, there was conjecture about a man purchasing him and then, perhaps in the shameful case of buyer’s remorse, abandoning him later.

Darien’s status at the time was not ideal: He was undernourished, had wounded feet, and damaged teeth. But he was able to be safely transported out of the city.

He’s now at Quakertown’s Last Chance Ranch, a rehabilitator of equines and farm animals.

And he’s improving.

“He’s really doing a lot better,” said Sarah Barnett, Interim Co-Executive Director of ACCT Philly, the animal shelter near where Darien was found. “He’s more alert. He’s more perky.”

Potential adopters have come forward; his Bucks County caregivers are waiting until Darien recovers completely before entertaining thoughts of placing him in a new home.
