Bucks County’s Jake Goldberg has retained his love of arcade play well into adulthood. He recently focused his devotion to retro fun on the original Pac-Man. ABC7 New York reported where that hobby led him.

Goldberg set out to survive the entirety of electronic encounters with the Pac-Man crew: Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde.

His quest began Apr. 14 at 10:00 p.m. and ended 4 hours and 12 minutes later, in the wee hours of April 15.

By then, he had defeated 256 levels of chase-and-pursue joystick maneuvers.

The final score? Goldberg: 3,333,360. Video villains: 0. He is only the 11th player worldwide to successfully navigate every maze and tally the highest possible number of points the addictive munching challenge allows.

“I knew I could do it,” he said. “Following the patterns wasn’t too difficult for me. I knew it was just a matter of time. But I was very relieved when it happened.”

The epic challenge was something of a dance on a knife blade. “The slightest mistake can ruin your whole game,” Goldberg explained.

Pac-Man was originally pitched to female video game players as an alternative to the then-popular violent games already in neighborhood arcades. It became a cultural phenomenon in the 1980s, leading to several game sequels, two television series, a hit song, and extensive merchandising.

More on Jake Goldberg’s Pac-Man perfection is at ABC7 New York.

Although this video does not reflect Goldberg’s championship play, it does resurrect
the experience of the original, arcade version of Pac-Man.
