Fred Richter, player for and coach of the Quakertown High School basketball team, has long been called a legend. But later this month, he’ll officially be bestowed the title. Karen Sangillo reported his induction into the Pa. Sports Hall of Fame in the Bucks County Herald.

Richter was a three-year starter for Quakertown’s basketball team back in the 1960s.

After earning his degree from East Stroudsburg University (where he also played), Richter took to coaching, leading the squad at Central Bucks High School – East.

From there, he returned to Quakertown High School. His 1982–1991 run there comprised 145 wins and a league championship.

In 1991, it was back to college coaching, this time at what would become the legendary DeSales University’s woman’s basketball program. During his tenure, his players won 11 conference championships and appeared in 10 NCAA tournaments. The Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament twice.

“My love of the game took me from playing at the high school level at Quakertown, and the college level, at East Stroudsburg University, to coaching at both levels,” Richter said.

“Coaching women at DeSales University has been a dream come true, teaching young ladies to play the ‘right way’ as well as life lessons from playing the great game of basketball.”
