Fox Subacute at Warrington, which specialized in patients needing ventilator care, is closing.

Fox Subacute at Warrington — one of only four Pa. post-acute care providers specializing in ventilator care — has announced its closure. The facility finds itself unsustainable, owing to the combined effects of high staffing costs and underfunding from the state.

Its exit from the area healthcare market takes 60 ventilator beds with it. Fox Subacute is now working with managed care organizations to transition patients elsewhere for continued services.

“Fox Subacute at Warrington has been a part of this community, providing specialized care for patients from Bucks County and beyond, for nearly 40 years,” said Jim Foulke, Fox Subacute CEO, at a Mar. 31 press conference.

“Our residents and caregivers are family,” he continued. “This facility is both a home for some and a career for the others inside it. And unfortunately, we have been forced into a situation where we have to take that away because the care we provide to vulnerable Pa. residents isn’t adequately funded by the state.”

Pa. Medicaid payments cover almost all the costs associated with care at Fox Subacute. A 2021 bump of $2 million in support from the commonwealth kept the facility operating last year, but skyrocketing costs for supplies and staff ultimately proved too daunting.

In addition to finding appropriate sites for patients, the healthcare provider also commits to helping its 100 Bucks County employees transition to Fox Subacute sites in Plymouth Meeting, Mechanicsburg, and Phila.
