Career Corner: The Biggest Issues Preventing You from Advancing at Work

Waiting to get recognition and opportunities at work can sometimes feel like it is out of your hands. If you are trying your best and seeing no new results, what more can you do?

But for some people, what might be getting you passed over are things you are doing that are getting bad attention. Fast Track Promotion discussed this topic, and here are some of the major causes of you not getting the opportunities you want at work.

You Don’t Take Feedback Well

Is your immediate response to criticism to start defending yourself? If you perceive any corrections as an attack, you are not being receptive to how you can improve.

Sometimes it is better to leave aside explaining your intentions and accept that you need to try something new.

You Cut People Down

People who feel they are not able to elevate themselves often try to level the playing field by pulling others down.

If you are leaping on any opportunity to try and look smarter than a coworker or badmouthing people behind their backs, you are not endearing yourself to your job.

You Lack Confidence

If you want to be treated like a leader you need to act like one. You can’t be second-guessing every decision and running to others to check that you did everything okay. How can others have confidence in you if even you don’t?

You Don’t Take Credit for Your Work

There is something to be said for being humble, but don’t expect everyone to be aware of how much work you do. If you have a big accomplishment, it falls on you to let people know. You can take credit without bragging.

You Act Like You Don’t Want to be There

Maybe you have grown frustrated at your lack of advancement and that bitterness has started to show. This is self-sabotaging and will only become a self-fulfilling prophecy for you getting passed over.

You can’t always guarantee you get the recognition you deserve, but bad habits can certainly guarantee you ruin your chances.
