Career Corner: What You Can Do When You Hate Work

Frustrated at Work
Career Corner BCCC

Lots of people hate their jobs, but perhaps for you, it is at the point that you fantasize about quitting. Before doing so, maybe there are ways you can remedy your frustrations.

The site Career Contessa features a variety of scenarios that could be contributing to your workplace aggravation and solutions for managing them.

Here are answers for some of the most common complaints.

You’ve Stopped Advancing

It could be that you have simply done it all in your current role and now you have plateaued and are bored. Is it possible for you to advance to a higher role? Or take on new responsibilities in your current position?

Work that lets you learn new things or express your creativity could be all you need to reignite your passion.

You’re Burnt Out

Perhaps you don’t hate your job, but hate that it has taken over your life. Maybe long hours crept in and never went away.

Can you communicate with your boss about what aspects have become unsustainable for you? Maybe a compromise can be reached.

Post-pandemic, many employers are much more amenable to remote work, or a hybrid schedule.

New Management

Your frustration might be more tangible, such as the boss you loved has been replaced by a jerk.

If it’s legitimately possible that the whole thing could be a misunderstanding, maybe try professionally discussing the matter one on one to try and explain how their predecessor did things and why the new system is causing a disconnect.

However, if the new boss is just obstinate and malicious, you can give telling HR a shot, but by that point, a new job might be your best recourse.

When you say you hate your job, look past those initial feelings of anger to see the reasons behind those emotions. That will help you see what is causing this and aid you in determining if this is something that can be resolved, or if a fresh start is indeed your best option.
