Kona, the Chief Compost Supervisor of her namesake: Kona Compost Co. in Yardley.

In an act of one-good-turn-deserves-another, the Kona Compost Co. in Yardley took a monetary award and turned it over to another Bucks County nonprofit. Chris English covered the doubled-up windfall in the Bucks County Herald.

Kona Compost Co. was named the 2021 recipient of the Lower Makefield Township Advisory Council Environmental Stewardship award.

The honor was made to highlight its business model: making rich compost from clients’ food waste and lawn clippings and returning some of that ag resource for customer use. The company also donates compost to local community gardens and schools.

Upon receipt of the $1,000 award, Kona owner Heather Guidice forwarded it to Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve in Solebury Township. As a for-profit entity, she was ineligible to retain the check.

Guidice did, however, also get a plaque, which she kept.

“They’re reducing food waste in Bucks County one home at a time,” said Lower Makefield Board of Supervisors’ Chairman James McCartney, citing the positive impact of Kona Compost.
