Career Corner: Announcing Your New Job on Social Media

Announcing a new Job
Career Corner BCCC

A new job is usually a cause for celebration, and that’s something you want to share. However, show some restraint and think about the ways sharing that news now might actually backfire. If you are not sure why you would need to be cautious, Vyten had a post sharing some possibilities to be leery of.

You Announce it Too Soon

As the old internet rule goes, do not post anything online you are not comfortable with everyone knowing about you. So if you post about a job change that you do not want your current work to hear about yet, the word could easily get back to the wrong person and create problems for you. Keep a lid on it until you are in the new job.

Share it Everywhere at Once

This is another aspect of controlling your narrative. Make sure everyone finds out on your time.

It is likely your connections differ depending on the platform, and you don’t want your big news being found out via gossip.

Once you are ready to share, let all of your platforms know simultaneously. This also helps in case you have certain connections added on only one platform that you definitely want to be informed.

What to Say

Keep the content of your post positive and optimistic about the future. Do not use this moment to rant about whatever you disliked about your old position, regardless of what happened there.

Doing so can create a backlash against you, and it takes the spotlight off your big news. Be gracious to your old employer for the opportunity they gave you, and share what it is about your new company that excites you for the future.

Staying professional on all your social media is a good tip in general, but especially on LinkedIn be mindful that the purpose of the site is to network. Whatever you share will be remembered the next time you are seeking a new position.
