As Sports Cards Become ‘America’s Hobby Again,’ Business Booms for This Memorabilia Shop in Wayne

By

The pandemic has ushered in a major comeback of trading cards, making them “America’s hobby again” and providing Wheelhouse Cards in Wayne with a significant bump in business, writes Jan Carabeo for CBS3 Philly.

“This is a full-service sports card and collectible shop,” said Wheelhouse Cards owner Jon Spadaford. “There’s been a high demand, and we’ve been swamped since we opened.”

Spadaford, who is a life-long fan of the hobby himself, spotted an opening and decided to take advantage of it.

“I had to drive an hour in any direction to find a good card and hobby shop,” he said. “I signed a lease, and here we are.”

Spadaford sends out cards to a third-party company to grade them based on authenticity and condition, which serves as a base for pricing them.

“A Kobe Bryant and LeBron James — even a Zion Williamson card — is going for upwards of a million dollars on a fairly regular basis these days,” he said.

For Spadaford, however, it’s not all about the money.

“We wanted to create a space for all different generations to come in together,” he said.
