Philadelphia International Airport will see more international passengers now that the U.S. reopened its borders to fully vaccinated travelers overseas, but flight routes to other countries cancelled from the restrictions won’t be back until 2022, writes Mike D’Onofrio for Axios.

United States borders have now been reopened to international passengers from more than 30 countries.

PHL is an American Airlines trans-Atlantic hub and a gateway to Europe. Most flight plans now in place will stay the same.

The number of international flights at PHL is down so far nearly 49% in November compared to the same time in 2019, says said Heather Redfern, a spokesperson for the city’s Division of Aviation.

The COVID-19 travel restrictions were put in place in early 2020 barring entry for most non-U.S. citizens traveling from places like China, Britain and India.

The U.S. has also reopened land borders this week with Canada and Mexico for vaccinated travelers.

Seven international routes will return to PHL in December, including Cozumel, Mexico; Santo Domingo and Santiago, Dominican Republic; and St. Lucia.

American Airlines will reveal its summer 2022 international schedule by year’s end.
