Arete Gallery in New Hope has a unique mission statement. Like other cultural centers of its kind, it seeks to highlight local artists and provide them with the opportunity to sell their work. But it also seeks creators with a specific, altruistic viewpoint. Bo Koltnow, from WFMZ 69 News, reported on this organization whose operations have been described as “the perfect marriage of virtue and art.”

Andrew Galdi and his Asian-style ink and watercolor paintings, for example, fit perfectly within the Arete Gallery environment.

The art is varied and engaging

The art is varied and engaging — some works bold, others subtle. But its painter also has a cause, which makes him an apt for this particular venue.

Galdi donates ten percent of each sale from his portfolio to cancer research. He makes this ongoing gift in honor of his wife, who he lost in 2014 to the disease.

Currently, the portion of his sales goes to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance. As it does with all its artists, the gallery matches Galdi’s contributions.

“We fund about $6 million of research each year,” said Alliance head of development Jon Zeidman. “But that is made up of thousands and thousands of smaller donations from people like Andrew.”

Galdi hopes his blend of beneficence and beauty resonates both inside and outside the gallery walls.

“What’s important to me as a parent is to set the right example for my kids,” he said. “To show them this is what you do.”
