Pennsylvania State Police Use Helicopter to Deliver Backpacks to Croydon’s Keystone Elementary School

By

Students at Keystone Elementary School found out recently that Santa’s not the only person who flies around with presents. First graders at the Croydon school each received a backpack that was delivered from above. Alicia Vitarelli picked up the details for 6abc.

A Pennsylvania State Police chopper hovered over the campus this week. From an open door, troopers tossed 200 backpacks — one for each first grader — to the ground below.

The donation is part of an ongoing relationship between the school and the Police Youth Alliance. That initiative, undertaken by the Families Behind the Badge Children’s Foundation, seeks to create positive interactions between police officers and the children in the communities they serve.

“It’s an opportunity for them to connect with the police officers, to have a relationship with them, and also to discover what kind of career paths they can take in law enforcement as they get older,” said Bernadette Hannah, the vice principal of the Armstrong Middle School.

The program also included a chance to see the helicopter up close, a visit a German Shepherd member of the K9 unit, and enjoy a student bucket-drum performance.

More on this special day at Keystone Elementary School is at 6abc.
