Actor-singer-musician-composer Andrew Polec, of Doylestown, took first prize in the 2021 edition of an international vocal competition in New York City.

Polec won The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music’s Annual Lotte Lenya Competition. The contest is named respectively for the 20th century composer of songs such as “Mack the Knife” and his singer-actress wife.

The 500 contestants who comprised Polec’s competitors represented 29 countries and 39 states.

Polec performed a continuous, 15-minute program of four contrasting numbers:

  • “She Loves Me” from the Broadway show of the same name
  • “Bilbao Song” from Happy End
  • “Confession Aria” from Dead Man Walking
  • “How Glory Goes” from Floyd Collins

In presenting the songs, Polec wove them together to form a short one-act musical drama. His skill earned him the $20,000 top prize.

Brady Sansone, Director of Programs and Business Affairs at the Kurt Weill Foundation said, “Andrew achieved one of the highest scores in the history of the competition and is a terrific example of precisely what the Lenya Competition rewards: singing actors/acting singers who can ‘do it all’!”

Andrew Polec was elated by his win. “When they announced my name for first place, I was so unbelievably grateful and honored I was with such a talented group of artists,” he said.
