The proposed Southeast Campus of Delaware County Community College, formerly known as Archbishop Prendergast High School, was open for tours to elected officials, business leaders, school district representatives and college administrators and trustees, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Daily Times.

The former Prendergast school at 401 N, Lansdowne Ave. in Upper Darby, was chosen for the new campus because many of the community college’s students live nearby.

 “This site has been an important part of this community for many, many years, serving as an orphanage, a school and even a community garden,” DCCC President Dr. L. Joy Gates Black said.

“We are excited to continue this legacy of service as we fulfill the mission of Delaware County Community College…”

The college purchased the high school from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

A multi-million dollar community-centered high-tech college campus is envisioned on 7.5 acres of the 30-acre property.  It will combine the college’s Upper Darby Center and the Southeast Center in Sharon Hill.

 The proposed campus includes a community empowerment center with computer labs, chemistry and biology labs, culinary arts instruction kitchens, nursing and allied health training facilities, an early childhood education center, and a workforce training program annex.
