Penns Woods Winery in Chadds Ford took two of three awards in the 2021 Pennsylvania Sommelier Judgment, writes Leanna Tilitei for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

It won for producing Pennsylvania’s best red and white wines.

The vineyard’s 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve took the top spot for reds. The 2020 Sauvignon Blanc took the top spot for whites.

The two wines missed the top title of Best in State to Breinigsville-based Stony Run Winery’s 2019 Albariño.

Penns Woods is a family-run winery. It has wine tastings to sample its myriad wines. On weekends, with reservations, there are vineyard tours.

The fifth annual Sommelier Judgment was outdoors for the second year in late May because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Twenty-two wines from 13 Pennsylvania wineries were recognized from 21 expert panelists.

The event puts the focus on local wineries, said Bob Trimble, one of the judges.

“What is also exciting to see is that many of the restaurants are now offering at least a few local selections on their wine lists or by-the-glass selections, which really was not the case a few years ago,” said Trimble.
