Chenoa Manor, which straddles the border between New Garden and London Grove townships, provides sanctuary for animals that were abused or facing slaughter, writes Steven Hoffman for the Chester County Press.

Most of its rescued animals result from inquiries triggered by the American Sanctuary Association or humane officers. They are often victims of various abuses that include factory farming, hoarding, and lab experiments. They also sometimes come from regions hit by natural disasters.

Founded two decades ago by itinerant veterinarian Dr. Rob Teti, the farm specifically supports exotic animals or livestock, not traditional housepets or wildlife. At any time, the 25-acre site can shelter as many as 250 inhabitants. Residents range from horses, cows, and sheep to birds, turtles, and guinea pigs.

There is even a flock of vultures that has fashioned a nearby home.

“Some people don’t like them, so they formed a colony here,” said Christiane Moore, of Chenoa Manor.

Chenoa Manor also provides volunteer and internship opportunities for both youth and adults. They often continue with the organization to help guide the sanctuary.
