Tomas Vallejo, a senior at Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, received a full ride to the University of Chicago with help of Inn Dwelling of Philadelphia, writes Marc Narducci for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Vallejo credits his academic prowess to the nonprofit that supports gifted, low-income students in the Philadelphia region with whatever they need to succeed. This includes after-school tutoring, test prep, training in public speaking, and mentoring, among many other services.

“Being part of Inn Dwelling has been one of the biggest blessings in my life,” said Vallejo.

Vallejo, whose full academic scholarship is worth around $200,000, joined Inn Dwelling in seventh grade. The following year, he earned a full scholarship to Holy Ghost Prep for four years. Without this, his family would not have been able to afford the $24,000 annual tuition.

Through the nonprofit, the gifted student also learned about QuestBridge, the California-based nonprofit that connects exceptional, low-income youth with leading colleges and opportunities. This secured his university scholarship.

“I feel very happy, especially since all the sacrifices my parents have made that led to this moment,” he said.
