Philly’s World Cup Moment Sparks Statewide Tourism Surge in Pennsylvania

Fans gather at Philadelphia's FIFA Fan Festival, part of the state's push to turn World Cup excitement into a statewide tourism boost.

Pennsylvania is riding the wave of the 2026 FIFA World Cup straight into a global tourism push, writes Isaac Avilucea for Axios Philadelphia.

The state has poured more than $50 million into tourism promotion tied to the summer’s marquee events, funding everything from influencer partnerships to FIFA fan zones to a targeted $1.2 million ad blitz aimed squarely at countries whose national teams are scheduled to play matches in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Deputy Tourism Secretary Anne Ryan shared that the World Cup may belong to Philadelphia, but the spotlight extends well beyond city limits. “This is Philly’s show, but it’s also Pennsylvania’s moment,” she said.

The campaign has segmented its pitch by nationality, betting that French, German, and Brazilian fans want to see different versions of the state.

French audiences are getting ads built around Philadelphia’s Michelin-starred restaurants and France’s role in the American Revolution. German visitors are pointed toward Germantown, Pennsylvania Dutch traditions, and local beer halls. Brazilian marketing leans into the city’s festivals and nightlife.

The state has also enlisted a roster of creators, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, dubbed “Visit PA’s Playmakers,” to serve as ambassadors at major events throughout the summer.

On the ground, that translates into tourism activations at Philadelphia’s FIFA Fan Fest, a dedicated Pennsylvania Day celebration, and free fan zones set up in Pittsburgh, Reading, and Scranton, extending the World Cup’s reach well past Philadelphia.

So far, the early numbers back up the strategy. Ryan said bookings to Philadelphia from several World Cup-participating countries have jumped between 25% and 59% in recent months.
